🔬 Be Part of Research
Taking part in a clinical study is more than just receiving care — it’s an opportunity to help shape the future of medicine.
Most people who take part in research tell us they find it rewarding, knowing they are helping improve treatments for the future.
We Are a Research Active Practice
Hathaway Medical Centre has an established Clinical Research Unit and has been involved in UK and international studies for over 20 years.
We work in partnership with leading pharmaceutical companies and academic organisations to help improve patient care and advance medical knowledge.
We are committed to providing research patients with a high standard of care, safety and attention.
Why Clinical Research Matters
Clinical research is essential to the progress of medicine. Without it, we would not have the safe and effective treatments, vaccines and technologies we rely on today.
Research helps to:
Improve patient care through better prevention, diagnosing and treatment methods
Ensure new medicines are thoroughly tested, safe and effective
Advances medical knowledge, paving the way for future innovations.
Offer patients the opportunity to gain early access to cutting-edge treatments and contribute to future healthcare
In short, clinical research saves lives and shapes the future of healthcare.
Your Safety and Choice
All studies offered at Hathaway Medical Centre follow strict national and international research guidelines to ensure our patients are given the opportunity to be involved in high-quality research.
Suitable patients for each study are identified and invited to studies through secure database searches – taking part is entirely voluntary.
Patients involved in research receive individual consultations with research doctors and regular monitoring by research nurses.
Your care and your relationship with your doctor will not be affected in any way if you decide not to take part in a research study.
Areas We Commonly Research
We have taken part in studies involving:
Blood pressure management
Cholesterol control
Diabetes
Asthma
Irritable bowel syndrome
Osteoarthritis
Obesity
Urinary conditions
Kidney disease
Hathaway is mainly engaged with late phase 2B and phase 3 studies, occasionally a phase 4 study.
Understanding Study Phases
Clinical studies take place in stages to ensure treatments are safe and effective:
Phase 1 – Early safety testing in healthy volunteers.
Phase 2
A – Testing in small to medium groups of patients who have the disease to assess safety and effectiveness.
- B – Larger scale groups following successful findings in Phase 2A
Phase 3 – Large studies comparing treatments before approval.
Phase 4 – Ongoing monitoring of licensed medicines to assess long-term effects.
Studies Currently Recruiting
EASI-KIDNEY
A large international study for people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The study is investigating whether a new medication can reduce the harmful effects of aldosterone, a chemical linked to worsening kidney and heart disease.
COAT – Cellulitis Optimal Antibiotic Treatment
Identifying patients presenting with cellulitis to determine optimal antibiotic treatment.
OPTIMISE 2
A study looking at reducing blood pressure medication in patients aged over 75 with moderate to severe frailty. Eligible patients will be invited by letter.
DURATION UTI
Investigating the optimal duration of antibiotic treatment for women presenting with urinary tract infections.
Other Studies We Support
We also support academic research by acting as a Patient Identification Centre.
This means we may identify eligible patients through secure database searches and invite them to contact researchers directly if interested.
Patient information is not shared without appropriate consent.
